Shun Yu Mo
Studied Fashion Design for 4 years, but discovered the consumption nature and inhumanity of the subject. I have always been a deviance of the field by creating alternative presentations, such as performances and video collaboration. Turned to Fine Art in 2008, using video, time based media as the main medium to create.
Subject and context mostly deal with the post-80s born generation’s living style and situation, how the generation affects and shape by the contemporary consumer society. Works focus on the instability, uncertainty, fragment and loneliness of both the creating medium and human.
Mainly work with time-based media.
My practice mostly demonstrate of two major points, the first is the relationship between contemporary art and capital, market oriented society, how artists are in a dilemma situation nowadays struggling how to so-called “balance” the humanity and marketability in their artworks. The second is something more concern with my own experience and observation on Hong Kong’s post-eighties generation, comparatively a local context with the first point, but still closely related to the above arguments. The impacts of technology, information and consumption have not been as powerful as nowadays, the post-millennium era, by exploring the Hong Kong’s ideological complexity, high density space construction and the complicated growing background of the generation. The particular generation faces conflicts between trendy, traditional, diversity values everyday, through practical daily life, television, print media, and internet. The ambiguity that caused by different occasions of the certain generation is the most interesting thing I found that should be further represent in a artistic way.
