Margaret Somers
The juxtaposition and combination of commonplace but incongruent materials and objects underlines the mutability of the ideas and associations I explore in my object making. The capricious way that our visual and tactile senses can make unexpectedly complex psychological suggestions and allow us imaginative leaps into a world which can be playful and humorous, or perhaps sinister and disturbing?
Precarious, conversational and un-heroically informal, my objects utilize low-tech, makeshift means of construction which discover the ideas and associations which unfold during their making. Referring to surreal and cartoonist imagery, they often take on comical organic or anthropomorphic nuances. Within these forms I playfully investigate the pleasure and freedom involved in making the psychological and conceptual shifts involved in seeing and representing things in new ways.
