Lydia Chatzistefanidou
I realize my artworks in discourse with existing sites, engaging with both their physical character as well as their sociopolitical content and the meanings that they bear for those who experience them. I seek that the artwork is lived on a first level through a sensuous experience which on a second level allows meanings to rise in consciousness. My methodology is focused in trying to ‘hearken’ and study the nature of each space I engage with. Usually, this leads to a recognition of the partiality of what is commonly experienced by the subjects when dealing with the mainly established and everyday aspect of that place. Then I insert an antithetical space to the existing one, in order to negotiate its partiality and explore the possibilities of its expansion, reconfiguring the way people usually experience the specific space. With my artwork I explore, from different points of view, how can the poetics of the artwork intervene in the politics of space.
