Jee-Hyun "Jessica" Kwun

Nowadays, lots of women spend more energy and time than ever before in making their bodies as beautiful as possible. In our largely practical society they also try to make their body shapes and faces as attractive as possible. Some of them just do exercise, while others diet sometimes with very serious side-effects. There is and even a group which resorts to plastic surgery, feeling that their bodies are somehow wrong. Can women really be happy and find their self-identities min this way? Why do they choose such methods, even though they know that that beauty will eventually pass anyway, as they grow older?
Many women might be isolated by the traps which they make for themselves, losing their humanity and even facing death, like ‘living dolls’ or ‘deflated flowers’. Every woman’s magazine carries distressing reports of this losing battle, but somehow rational argument is pushed aside as women in large numbers try to preserve their appearance at almost any cost.
With the symbolic costume as a central figure, this performance tries to address the female predicament. It evokes pretty heavy and controversial issues such as feminism, the political relationship between female and male, ageism, materialism, commercialism and the mythology of beauty. I intend to express those things ironically or metaphorically through this performance of ‘Ephemeral Drama’, which is achieved by combining humorous narrative, performative ideas, sounds, video and lighting.
I will also explore communication with the audience through use of applying fashion performance as a sign system.
