Jane Bailey

My current practice is lens based. I use photographic imagery of architectural spaces to explore issues of urban anxiety.
It is well documented that agoraphobia emerged as a pathological condition at the end of the nineteenth century and is fundamentally linked to the development of the modern metropolis. It is an anxiety disorder that is often precipitated by the fear of losing control in a situation where the sufferer feels trapped and from which there is no easy means of escape. Triggers may include crowded public places such as shopping centers and cinemas, wide open spaces, confined spaces such as tunnels, car parks and underpasses and public transport. Sufferers are predominantly women and are often confined to the home where they feel safe and secure.
I am interested in using photography to explore the relationship between agoraphobia as a gendered condition and the contemporary urban environment.
