Grigoria Vryttia
Grigoria Vryttia (born 1983, Greece) received a First Degree in the discipline of sculpture from the Dpt of Fine and Applied Arts of the School of Fine Arts, A.P.Th. in 2007. At the time she is living in London where she is participating in the MA course at the WCA. Her current practice involves an exploration in issues related to drawing and site-specificity, always from the sculptor’s viewpoint. Predominantly she uses soft materials, sticky tapes, textiles, foam, wire and occasionally found objects. With her major affinities being with Mike Kelly, Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama and Yoshitomo Nara her work roams between playful pop and strictly articulated abstraction. Other influences derive from the sci-fi and occult culture, as well as cinema and literature.
Throughout the last year there are a few themes that keep reappearing as a leit-motif. One of them is the “Alice in Wonderland” characters and incidents and the other is an interest in dates. Originally they were used instead of a signature on the two dimensional woks exclusively. It was also an exploration of letrisme and more specifically as it appears in the Chinese and Japanese paintings. Merging with the exploration of space as planes the “dates” started appearing on objects or next to objects as well.
Besides sculpture she occasionally produces functional objects, like accessories, toys and jewellery.
