Emma Purchase

‘Preparing for Water’ is a body of work derived from a period of research into the possibility of ‘becoming a fish.’ The playful desire to ‘be a fish’, carries the appeal of an assumed utopia, which often accompanies transformation and escape. However, the fish is a creature that has a strained relation to humans, neither can inhabit the other’s world without the aid of survival mechanisms, adding a futility to the endeavor.

The project has come full circle as to truly become a fish an intimate relationship needs to be bridged with the environment the creature inhabits- the water. ‘Preparing for Water’ utilizes man’s artificial ocean, the swimming pool, as a space to inhabit and control, breathing life into this new space to prepare for the possibilities of transformation.

Emma is an artist and performer whose work explores an assumed utopia of a transformed existence; constructing narrative based works, often using the symbolic animal as a carrier for human experience and situations.

Emma’s work has crossed disciplines between performing and visual arts, and has a keen interest in creating a dialogue with a variety of audiences.
