Brían Crotty
My work is autobiographical in nature. Its content is an exploration of personal memory and emotional responses to events that have molded my identity. They are constructed scenes and ambiguous moments caught in time and reconstructed in an imaginary space.
The application of paint is the key to displaying the emotive drive. I have painted them to be romantic in their conception and resonant with symbolic potential using muscular and rhythmic strokes to create the illusion of a non-existent space for the figure to be placed in. I am not only depicting a constructed scene or a memory of it, I am imitating the way it becomes itself, making these characters mythical and autobiographical. As my identity is molded by a working class Cork background my paintings reflect these themes. I am dealing with issues of the family unit and displacement.
