Becky Davies

I will create works in multiple locations addressing the subject of interactivity, delight, nonsense and surprise. I will make a series of temporary interventions in multiple locations around the college; to project small-scale drawings and text built from observations; inventing a fictional or imagined narrative in the space. I will use plastic, wood, paper, string, paint, straw and fabric. To work with the theme of celebration and ritual in a public environment; Colour is important.

I will consider ideas of subversion and conformity and how rules can be used to frame a work in the context of an art institution. It is ways in which we adopt habits and perceive through a learnt activity. I am interested in the intuitive precariousness and the placement of materials in a space. To suggest uncertainty or danger; a chaos which might provoke confound or confusion in the viewer. It is the contrast of a precious or intimate with the notion of disregard and omission; an accident.

With deliberate emphasis taken away from the individual or art object, I will focus on an a social activity or situation. It is the process of making which involves participants; to orchestrate the event. To construct a situation or provide a framework for dialogue; a communication or exchange takes place. To give and to take is an interaction; reciprocating or exchanging. I see art as a gift that leaves us altered; a transformation or change.

I am interested in the tangible or tactile; the capability to be perceived especially by the sense of touch. A definite and actual physical experience. Using found objects such as umbrellas, tents and balloons I will explore the form or idea of a non-solid. A prop is placed in areas of the overlooked; a ceiling, a stairwell, a cupboard, your window sill or a floorboard. The location is a site for instruction.
