My concerns are focused on presenting the inherent polysemic and ambiguous qualities that lie within painting. In attempting to represent a world I see through painting I am both consciously and unconsciously involved in the manipulation of visual signs. These signs are the fabric of this indeterminate and interpretive painting.
I paint images which concentrate on the concept of looking. There exists a three way dynamic between the viewer, the piece and the interpretant. These representations of individual and collective memory merge and become heterogeneously loaded through the act of painting. Subjects can be derived from geographical, suburban and non-suburban surroundings. The distant urban setting infused with a veil of melancholic ambiguity or the unknowing figures seen through the eyes of the voyeur. Images are assimilated and the painting process is the most direct way in which I can then engage and invent an individual vision of collective experience.
Newspaper images, personal photographs and experience are reference points. The act of looking and seeing through different visual levels of the painted two-dimensional aesthetic is captivating and informing my approach to painting. The indeterminacy of visual interpretation of the image is now stimulating my painting.
