Anne Laure Harskamp

My practice focuses on architectural space, particularly spaces that are uninhabited or where little or no social activity is taking place. Some of these spaces are dysfunctional, such as derelict buildings or vandalised shops, others could be described as non-places; areas that are not given enough importance because of their nature or location.

I often start off my creative process by photographically documenting the particular chosen architectural space. Depending on its accessibility I position myself either within or surrounding the location, returning time after time to document its characteristics and its possible changes.

Through drawing and photography I seek to examine the inter-relations between these architectural spaces and their surroundings, highlighting the opposition between unused and socially active spaces. I aim to revive these places, turning disregarded architectural space into space with a function.
